The Big Trip -- Introduction

What is The Big Trip (always capitalized)? Well, Shana and I have been discussing for years taking a multi-month trip through Asia and Oceania. We had originally thought we would take this trip prior to moving to Spain, but the result of the 2016 election and accelerated our time-frame for leaving the US. Then, we planned to begin the trip in October 2020, but Covid intervened and made any such trip impossible. Now, the time has finally come!

We have, once again, rented a storage unit and put most of what we own there, while packing just one suitcase and one backpack each for the road.

This afternoon (September 29), we left the apartment we  lived in for five years for the last time and grabbed a bus to the San Sebastian airport for a quick flight to Barcelona (we got a traditional San Sebastian send off, i.e. it was raining). After an overnight stay near the airport, we will catch a flight for Bari, Italy, which is in the Puglia region (the "boot"). In Puglia, we will meet up with my parents for a week before heading to Rome and, after a couple of nights there, we will fly to Singapore.

Since we don't want to give too much away in advance, we will just say that the trip will be about five months (September 29, 2022 - March 1, 2023), and will include visits to seven countries: Italy, Singapore, Austrailia, New Zealand, Vietnam, (the soon to be reopened) Japan, and the US.

You can follow our adventures here. We plan to blog once a week during the trip, probably late in the week. So, hopefully you will check in each week to see where we ( are and what we are doing.

Arrivederci,

Jeff and Shana
